Heights Lodge #633. Historical Archive for Masonic Years 1931– 1934

1931
On December 5, 1930, Bro. Harold H. Gorman was installed as W.M. for the Masonic Year 1931. On that same evening, 1 petition for membership and 2 petitions for affiliation were received. The Master appointed proper committees and went on to regular Lodge business. At the December 19 meeting 1 M.M. proficiency exam was passed and three candidates received their E.A. degree. In February the work picked up since 6 petitions for membership were received on the 6th of the month. Also 2 petitions for affiliation were received. On February 20th 4 candidates received their E.A. degree and 3 E.A.'s were passed to the degree of Fellowcraft. On March 11th, 2 affiliates were accepted and 3 candidates got the E.A. Degree and 3 E.A.'s passed their proficiency exam. As of this month the Lodge went down to 2 meetings a month, being the 1st and 3rd Friday. The rush for membership had settled down considerably. An occasional special meeting was called, but not as it had been up to this time; automatically 4 meetings per month and a 5th occasionally. The net gain in membership for 1931 was 10 for a total of 746.

1932
Preceeding the Masonic Year 1932, Bro. Marcellus DeVaughn became the new Wor. Master. On January 13th, 2 E.A,'s were passed to the degree of Fellowcraft. The minutes still do not reflect any type of entertainment for ladies nights, or children and ladies evenings. With 746 members there didn't need to be any incentive to get the brethren out to meetings. At the end of Masonic Year 1932 the members dropped by 13 to 734, the first negative trend.

1933
As the year 1933 begins, Bro, William M, Schofield became W.M. The petitions for membership and affiliation keep coming in steadily at the rate of 2 membership petitions and 1 affiliate petition per month as an average. This year turned out to be poor regarding the work, as only 3 were raised and 1 was affiliated, The net loss was 59 and the overall membership figure dropped to 651. This was a very bad year in the economy. F.D.R. put in the C.C.C. and W.P.A., but it would be a slow recovery. The crash of ‘29 was felt by all organizations this year in particular,

1934
For the Masonic year 1934 Bro. T. Sharp became Wor. Master and we began to see recovery in membership. 5 were raised, 5 affiliated and 3 reinstated total 694. Then subtract the loss of 59 (5 died, withdrawn 7, suspensions 47) - a net membership figure of 635.
